Chatuchak Weekend Market

There is a lot for tourists to like about Bangkok. The food, nightlife and culture are among the most popular, but the city’s popularity is increasing for another reason, affordability. Travel website TripAdvisor named Bangkok as the most affordable destination for a weekend getaway in Asia this holiday season.

The average cost of one-week trip to Bangkok, including hotel, plane tickets, meals and tours is THB 43,541, a TripAdvisor report notes. A pair of cities from the Philippines were second and third with Cebu and Luzon behind the Thai capital. Bali and Phuket rounded out the top ten.

The average costs to visit each city as calculated by TripAdvisor for a one-week trip adds up the costs of a seven-night hotel stay, average national round-trip airfare, two tours plus activities and three meals per day.

“This report comes in handy for travellers who are planning breaks at the New Year, be it for Chinese New Year or Valentine’s Day,” Janice Lee Fang, communications director for TripAdvisor in Asia-Pacific, explains. “It also offers insight into when is best to go to save on great hotels and activities if people book for the right time.”

While not the cheapest, Bali came out on top as the most popular destination in terms of interest for travellers in Southeast Asia looking to take a holiday during the festive season. Luzon, Hong Kong and Bangkok were other popular destinations while Tokyo, Singapore, Boracay, Phuket, Cebu and Seoul completed the top ten.

On the other end of the cost spectrum, the most expensive city on the list was Tokyo with a seven-day trip there costing THB 70,431. TripAdvisor says its report helps travellers save money during their upcoming trips by highlighting the least expensive week to visit, as well as helping tourists find highly-rated value hotels and tours.
