Bangkok’s Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is ready and prepared to distribute manuals to operators of older buildings in the city to educate them on how to deal with the effects of an earthquake.
The move came in response to surveys that indicated buildings constructed prior to 1997 were not designed to resist tremors, as required by present laws.
The Public Works Department is issuing 20,000 manuals to operators of older buildings detailing how to reduce the danger to residents in the event of an earthquake.
It will also instruct the buildings’ owners to improve the buildings’ structures in line with correct engineering practices. Buildings designed in accordance with the 1997 ministerial regulations should be able to withstand a tremor, is said it a statement.
The Public Works Department currently has 67 abandoned buildings from 41 projects under its care, most of which belonged to operators that subsequently faced financial difficulties.
