Two Singaporean city developers are considering a bid to help build a new capital city for Andhra Pradesh, a state in Southern Indian, The Straits Times reported. The project will include the building of government buildings as well as commercial and residential developments in the centre of the new capital, Amaravati.
The final master plan for the city was recently submitted to the Andhra Pradesh government by Singapore’s Surbana Jurong. The plan contains the land use and infrastructure designs for a 16.9sqkm start-up area of the city. Amaravati is estimated to be home to over 10 million people by 2050.
The city centre will host buildings for the legislative, executive and judiciary branches of the Andhra Pradesh government as well as areas to meet the employment, housing, social, cultural and recreational needs of the city’s future residents.
“Singapore is honoured to have been invited by the Andhra Pradesh government to help develop its new capital Amaravati,” said S Iswaran, the prime minister’s office minister and second minister for Trade and Industry, told The Straits Times. “This collaboration has also opened up more business and investment opportunities in Andhra Pradesh and India for Singapore companies.”
Iswaran added that the Singaporean city developers Ascendas-Singbridge and Sembcorp Development are likely to submit bids for this unique project and both firms could clinch the project. He stated both companies have proven track records in similar development projects in countries such as China and Vietnam and both have working knowledge of India.
The development in Amaravati is likely to help create business opportunities for Singaporean firms in areas such as manufacturing and logistics, Iswaran told the newspaper. The project could also have significance for bilateral ties between the two countries. If completed, it would be an example of how Singapore can help India build sustainable, smart cities, he added.
