A new sports brand has entered Thailand’s retail scene with Canterbury New Zealand opening a flagship store in Bangkok that the company hopes is the 1st of many to come. The company, which was established in 1904, offers men’s and women’s training attire, on-field accessories for select sports and a British-Irish fashion line.
The new shop can be found in the Phayathai Building and was opened by Silver Fern Holdings, the exclusive distributor for Canterbury in Thailand, reports Retail News Asia. The store is 70 sq, metres and offers 120 products from the company. Canterbury is best known for making uniforms for sports clubs.
Silver Fern Holdings has a 3-year expansion plan that will see the company open stores in major tourist cities such as Chiang Mai, Hua Hin and Phuket. The plans also call for shop-in-shop outlets at major shopping malls in Bangkok with Emporium, Siam Paragon and The Emquartier all expected to contain smaller shops.
“We aim to increase annual sales of Canterbury products in Thailand from the THB 15 million expected for this year to about THB 60 million in 3 years,” says Silver Fern Holdings MD Mark Bennett to Retail News Asia. “We see Thailand as a potential market for Canterbury sportswear products thanks to a growing middle class and the health-and-fitness trend.”
The exclusive stores require an estimated investment of THB 1.5 million per store and will be similar to the size of the recently opened flagship shop. Pop-up and shop-in-shop stores will likely be smaller. Canterbury also offers its products in Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea through domestic distributors or partners.
Canterbury is best known for its contributions to rugby where it is official kit supplier to some of the world’s leading teams in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. It also produces non-rugby related fitness apparel designed for training and routine workouts.
