With so many people visiting Thailand, more and more foreign companies have been looking to develop hotels in the country. Donaco International, an Australian entity, is the latest hotel operator to reveal it intends to open a property in the Kingdom. The company has plans to develop a 4-star hotel somewhere in Thailand, reports local media.
Donaco International will choose a prime tourist destination for the hotel, but an exact location has not been picked. The company is expecting the project to cost between THB 1.7 billion and THB 3.4 billion to complete.
“We will start the project in Thailand within 2 years with the Thai partner. For the location, we are looking for an attraction city, like Phuket, Samui, Chiang Mai or Bangkok. Donaco International is a public company listed on Australia’s stock exchange. We operate leisure and entertainment businesses across the Asia-Pacific region,” says Lim Keong Yew, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, to The Nation.
Donaco’s biggest business at the moment is the Star Vegas Resort and Club in Cambodia. The company purchased the entertainment and hotel complex in Poipet for USD 360 million. It is located close to Siem Reap, a popular tourist attraction, and that was one of the reasons the company bought it.
“With the Asean Economic Community, we believe Poipet can become a global destination similar to Macau and Singapore. In the past year, the hotel generated THB 3.1 billion from its accommodations and entertainment, and 90 per cent of the guests were Thai. There are about 5,000 guests per day,” says Lim.
Donaco International also has operations in Vietnam and other places in the Asia-Pacific region. Its flagship property in Vietnam is the Aristo Inter-national Hotel, a 5-star resort and entertainment complex. Located in northern Vietnam, the hotel has 400 guest rooms and brought in THB 530 million in revenue last year.
