More tall buildings are being constructed in the world, but the change is notably evident in Bangkok and Asia as a whole. According to The Skyscraper Center, Bangkok has the 15th most skyscrapers in the world and 3rd most in Southeast Asia. The research shows that Hong Kong has the most in the world while 4 Chinese cities made the top 10.
In order to qualify as a tall building, it has to stand over 150 metres tall. Thailand has 120 of these structures. Most of the massive buildings were finished in the past 20 years, which means the country has surged up the rankings recently. Thailand’s tallest building is MahaNakhon, which was completed in 2016.
The number of skyscrapers in Thailand is set to grow even further before the end of the decade. Magnolias Waterfront Residences at Iconsiam (315 metres), Four Season Private Residences (305 metres), The Residences Mandarin Oriental Bangkok at Iconsiam (269 metres), Canapaya Residences Tower (253 metres), and Ashton Chula-Silom (205 metres) are all under construction and should be finished in the next 2 years. The Grand Rama 9 Tower is planned to have 125 floors and will become the tallest building in the country should it be completed on schedule in 2022.

Most of the tall buildings in Thailand are located in Bangkok with a few in Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard. Only Jakarta and Singapore have more skyscrapers in Southeast Asia than Thailand with Kuala Lumpur and Makati being the only other cities in the region to make the list’s top 30.
The list noted that China continues to build the largest amount of skyscrapers with cities such as Shenzhen having grown from the ground up in the past 30 years. Shanghai is home to the 2nd tallest building in the world, Shanghai Tower, and had the 5th most tallest buildings in the world. Meanwhile, Guangzhou was ranked 9th on the list, but had 9 buildings over 300 meters, the 2nd most globally.
