Everyone is doing their best to keep a lid on COVID-19. Staying at home is the best way to slow down the spread of the virus and to minimise the risk of contracting it. However, trips out of the house are unavoidable and necessary to buy food and to exercise, but optimal hygiene will help kill the virus and reduce the risk of catching it.
1. Personal Hygiene
The most obvious place to start is with ourselves. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water spending about 20 seconds completing this task while washing as high as and including wrists.
Hand sanitiser is handy when on the go provided that it has at least 60 percent alcohol content. Avoid touching your face, nose, mouth and eyes, and only cough into a tissue that should be discarded immediately.
2. Surface Cleaning
Aside from the usual general cleaning of your home, take extra care to wipe down surfaces that are touched often with disinfectant. These include door handles, light switches, remote controls for home appliances, and even your mobile phone.
Remember to launder cleaning cloths after use as bacteria can harbour on the material and COVID-19 can survive on fabric.
3. Food Preparation
The highest risk of COVID-19 and food is contracting it on the packaging. Food home delivery has propelled in popularity during the lockdown as more people work from home, restaurants close and some people choose to isolate rather than venture out to buy their food.
Food should be removed from the packaging and placed on a plate as soon as possible, then the packaging either discarded or ideally properly cleaned ready to be recycled. The use of single-use plastics has risen during the pandemic, so handling the packaging correctly helps the environment too.

4. Laundry
Washing clothing regularly will help keep the virus at bay. Try to avoid shaking laundry until clean as the movement may help spread the virus further as the nature of COVID-19 is that it is an airborne virus. Where possible, change clothes upon returning from spending time outside.
Likewise, removing shoes and leaving them at the front door is the cultural norm in Asia and also more hygienic.
5. Wash, Wash and Wash Again!
Finally, remember to wash your hands as frequently as possible, especially when touching different surface types.
