Thailand’s Ministry of Transport will submit a proposal for Cabinet approval within the next 10 days for a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Japan on a substantial inter-Thailand railway project.
Transport Minister ACM Prajin Juntong made the announcement on Tuesday and revealed the Thai and Japanese governments are collaborating on three railway routes. These routes include Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Kanchanaburi – Bangkok – Aranyaprathet – Laem Chabang Port, and Mae Sot to Tak and Mukdahan.
He said his Ministry would propose the Cabinet seek a MOU with Japan for the Bangkok – Chiang Mai route and the Kanchanaburi – Bangkok – Aranyaprathet – Laem Chabang Port route.
Japan had previously expressed interest in constructing the Bangkok to Chiang Mai route first, according to the Minister, adding that the nation would dispatch officials to conduct a feasibility study next month. He estimated the study would take six months and construction would start next year.
The Transport Minister added no plans exist for the remaining two routes as they are a part of long-term infrastructure projects.
