Construction on the massive One Bangkok mixed-use development hasn’t begun yet, but the process is already drawing attention. There have been complaints about a lack of information on the environmental impact and traffic congestion management from those in the surrounding area which has forced the Bangkok Metropolitan Council (BMC) to create a panel to monitor the environmental impact study of the development, reports local media.
The BMC was sent a letter from the leaders of several nearby communities that voiced concerns about the THB120 billion mixed-use development. Most were worried about the possible impact of the project’s construction with Thonburi Panich Group and The Viriyah Insurance Company among the local business to have noted possible problems.
“The points of concern over construction work relate to dust, noise pollution, garbage and wastewater, as well as traffic problems. No one, it seems, has received information on how the developer will deal with these problems during and after construction,” says Pornchai Thebpanya, City Councillor and Chair of the BMC panel, to the Bangkok Post.
The government believes the company behind One Bangkok will be able handle these concerns. The project is located along Witthayu and Rama IV roads and sits on a 104-rai plot of land. The project will have office space, hotels, retail centres, and luxury condos once finished.
“We just want to make sure public hearings will be a forum where communities can air their concerns, not just listen to what the developer will do. We want to see a win-win solution for the developer and residents nearby,” said Mr Pornchai.
The environmental study will be conducted by Thai Thai Engineer who reached out to residents earlier in the year for feedback. There are also 2 public hearings scheduled as part of the environmental impact assessment which should be finished early in 2018.
