With a location in the heart of Bangkok’s central business district, it’s safe to say Sathorn is known more for business than pleasure. However, an influx of culture, fine dining, classy drinking spots and luxury residential projects has rejuvenated this 9-to-5 location.
The neighborhood reaches from Lumpini Park to the Chao Phraya River and is home to a number of embassies and luxury hotels including Metropolitan, Sukhothai and Banyan Tree. Yet it has always had a reputation of being more of a buttoned up destination best to be vacated once the workday ends. A number of exciting new lifestyle venues plus several landmark residential projects have started changing how people view Sathorn. Here are a few spots worth checking out the next time you find yourself there.
MahaNakhon Bangkok
MahaNakhon Tower – It’s hard not to miss this impressive building that towers over the entire city. The project was designed by German architect Ole Scheeren of OMA and the 77-story obelisk sports a futuristic aesthetic. The adjacent MahaNakhon CUBE already houses Vogue Lounge and L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon with the Ritz-Carlton Residences soon to follow. The residences feature 200 private homes sporting lavish furnishings and features that are sure to be the talk of the town.
Chicon – Fine French dining in a chic venue, Chicon was a pioneer in Sathorn and helped bring something new and fresh to the neighborhood. Chef Aurel Termini uses regionaly-sourced ingredients whenever possible and standout dishes include pan-fried mussels with lychee, white wine and dill oil and slow-cooked pig’s trotters.
Sathorn 11 Art Space – One of Bangkok’s most happening art spots is located where you would least expect to find it, in the straight-laced Sathorn. Co-owners Marc Green and Chaiyaporn “Mike” Boonmahanark envisioned the project as a means of revitalizing Sathorn’s creative side and fostering local talent. The main showroom houses a delightful collection of pieces while four atelier studios above the gallery are given to Thai artists who might not otherwise be able to cover the costs of a space in such a high-rent neighborhood.
Issara Collection Sathorn – While still a year away from opening, people can’t stop talking about Issara Collection Sathorn. The 33 coveted condos are situated in a peaceful seven-story low-rise. Traditional Thai design can be found throughout the building, which puts an emphasis on privacy and seclusion. There is a rooftop garden that offers residents a place to relax after a hard day of work.
