Drop in overseas interest in Thailand

11 Nov 2013

EXCLUSIVE: Thailand droped out the top ten most-searched overseas property destinations during October 2013, according the monthly TheMoveChannel’s Top of the Props survey of the most-searched overseas property buying destinations.

From its position as the third most-searched country in April – less than six months ago – and responsible for 6.78 pecent all all enquiries, the kingdom is now languishing in 11th spot in the table with just 1.56 percent of all enquiries on the U.K.-based overseas property portal.

Thailand property industry insiders are expecting interest from overseas to improve substantially with the onset of this month’s high season which will run until March.

At the top ot the league France overtook Spain to become the second-most popular property destination in the world, according to TheMoveChannel.com’s Top of the Props report. Demand for French real estate rose in October 2013, receiving the second highest number of enquiries on the site for the first time in over two years.
France is more popular than Spain for first time in over two years, and demand for French property now stands at a 7-month high. Demand for Spanish property at record low, while U.S. property accounts for more than one in 5 enquiries.

Trevor Leggett, Chairman of Leggett Immobilier, said: "It´s no surprise to me that France has now overtaken Spain in popularity – over here we seem to have come through the "Crise Financiere" relatively unscathed and the property market did not see the dramatic fall in transaction numbers suffered by some of our neighbours.

"Prime areas (Cote d´Azur, The Alps, Ile de France) retained their popularity with international buyers seeking a safe haven for their cash. We have noticed though that this confidence in the French market is spreading out across the country and our teams in more provincial areas have also been busy this year. From a personal basis we have seen sales more than double since 2010 and in the same period have seen our agent numbers rise from 67 to over 200.”
