Aeon Mall Phanom Penh

Japan’s Aeon Mall recently announced that it intends to continue on with plans to build more shopping complexes throughout the ASEAN including in Thailand, Retail News Asia reported. Indonesia and Vietnam are already slated to get new Aeon Malls and the company could soon look to Laos and Myanmar along with Thailand during its next round of expansion.

According to the website, Aeon is planning to build five more outlets in Jakarta after opening its first mall in the city during 2015. Three more branches will be placed in Ho Chi Minh City and another in Hanoi as well.

Aeon Mall’s ASEAN division director and executive general manager Mitsugu Tamai told Retail News Asia that the company is also studying the feasibility of business development in other ASEAN countries as well with the first Aeon Mall in opening in Thailand between now and 2020. While no location has been set, the mall will most likely be located somewhere on the outskirts of Bangkok. It is believed that the project will likely be done through a joint venture if a suitable partner can be found.

The company already has a mall in Phnom Penh built in conjunction with Bangkok-based Major Cineplex Group and the pair have plans to construct another project in the Cambodian capital. Major Cineplex chairman Vicha Poolvaraluk explained to the website that Major is investing nearly THB200 million on a 10-screen theater as well as a bowling alley.

Other Thai businesses could also open at the newest Aeon Mall in Cambodia, according to Retail News Asia. Interested parties include Black Canyon Coffee, Fuji Restaurant, Jaspal and S&P. The mall is expected to open early in 2018 and will be situated in the Pong Peay district.

Aeon Mall is already planning to continue its aggressive expansion China and the company believes more than ten percent of its overseas revenue will come from the country by 2020. There are currently 11 Aeon Malls in China and these outlets currently bring in roughly three percent of its overseas revenue from the country.
