Royal Merit Making Performed for HM The Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej

His Majesty the King performed royal merit making for HM the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, his father, at the Grand Palace on Saturday. Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha, HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, HRH Princess Soamsawali, Khun Ploypailin Jensen and Khun Sirikitiya Jensen also attended the ceremony.

His Majesty lit candles and paid respect to the image of Buddha while 30 monks chanted prayers. His Majesty then gave food and other offerings to the monks. After that, they chanted another prayer before departing the palace, reports Thai media.

On Friday, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha led Cabinet members in giving alms to 89 Buddhist monks at Government House to mark the first anniversary of the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Many state agencies in Thailand also conducted merit-making events to pay tribute to the late monarch.

Among these were the regimens under the banner of the Royal Thai Armed Forces (RTAF). RTAF Deputy Commander-in-Chief General Hassapong Yuwanawattanaha presided over a ceremony which was held at the armed forces’ headquarters. Royal Thai Navy Chief-of-Staff Adm Luechai Ruddit organised an alms-giving ritual to 199 monks and also released 889 birds and 18,889 fish to mark the passing of HM the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Members of the public participated in an alms giving ceremony to 199 monks from 14 temples at Bangkok’s Siriraj Hospital. Those at the event stood still with their heads solemnly bowed in front of the late monarch’s portrait for 89 seconds. This ceremony took place around the Prince Mahidol Memorial Statue at the hospital. The grounds were decorated with yellow marigolds, the colour that represents the late monarch’s birthday.

The Thai flag was flown at half-mast at Government House on Friday as well to mark the first anniversary of the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
