British firms have won the contract for the US$1.2 billion construction of the world’s tallest building.
London-based Mace will work with fellow British company EC Harris on the Kingdom Tower project (pictured) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. When completed, the tower will be 3,280 ft tall, taking the crown from the current tallest building – Dubai’s Burj Khallifa which stands at 2,717 ft.
The tower will be more than three times higher than Thailand’s tallest building – Baiyoke Tower 2 which stands at 997 ft.
Kingdom Tower is expected to be a mixed-use development featuring a hotel, apartments, office space and an observation deck. It will have more than 5.3 million sq ft of floor space.
Mark Reynolds, Chief Executive of Mace, said: "Kingdom Tower is a project of international importance and immense ambition and we are delighted to be part of the joint venture team tasked with its delivery."
Keith Brooks, Head of Property and Social Infrastructure at EC Harris, said: "Kingdom Tower will be a landmark building that will clearly demonstrate Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to the world."
Construction will begin later this year and is expected to take five years.
