Thailand’s Koh Tao was named as Asia’s best island for tourists and the world’s number eight at TripAdvisor’s inaugural Travellers’ Choice Islands awards.
The 21-sq km island situated at the Central Gulf Coast of Southern Thailand, emerged as Asia’s most sought-after island based on the millions of traveler reviews and opinions at TripAdvisor, the world’s biggest travel portal.
The island trumped Bali which is at number two, Gili Trawangan in Indonesia (fourth) and Boracay in the Philippines (fifth).
Other islands from Thailand included in Asia’s top ten are Koh Lanta in Krabi at third place, Phuket and Koh Samui at sixth and seventh place respectively.
“Whether you’re looking for idyllic palm-lined islands, or islands that offer a more cultural experience, you’ll find inspiration in these lists,” said Barbara Messing, Chief Marketing Officer at TripAdvisor.
Globally, Ambergris Caye in Belize clinched the crown, followed by St John at US Virgin Islands, Bora Bora in French Polynesia, Washington’s San Juan Island, while Greece’s Santorini grabbed the fifth spot.
The list also includes Mexico’s Isla Mujeres, followed by Moorea in French Polynesia, Thailand’s Koh Tao, Chile’s Easter Island and Madagascar’s Nosy Be.
