Alleged scammers pose as real estate agents to net THB5 million

27 May 2013

By Andrew Batt:

Four alleged scammers who are said to have acted as real estate agents have been arrested in Chanthaburi province after they conned their victims of some THB5 million.

The three male and one female suspect were arrested by Chanthaburi police, according to a report by the National News Bureau of Thailand on Saturday.

According to police, two suspects allegedly played the role of real estate agents while the other two allegedly acted as customers who were looking to buy but did not have enough money. The two customers would then get acquainted with locals in the area before relieving them of their money.

Police have said the latest victim of this scam was a 78-year-old who lives in Tha Mai District of Chanthaburi. He is alleged to have handed over THB500,000 to the alleged scam artists.

Police also believe affiliates of the alleged scammers are also operating in Sa Kaeo, Nakhon Nayok, and Prachinburi provinces, and have urged vigilance and to be notified of any suspicious acts.

Criminals who portray themselves to be real estate agents have also been at work in Phuket in recent months.
