Raising eyebrows in Ari

Pruksa new headquarters in Ari

The outline of a new commercial building under construction in the Ari area is raising eyebrows because of its unusual shape.

Built as the reported THB2.5 billion new headquarters for Pruksa Real Estate, the Pearl Bangkok on Phahonyothin Road’s design is inspiring a strong reaction with some long before construction is finished next year, especially in the online world where some of the comments are not exactly complimentary.

Pruksa insists it’s not a monument to its peen, but instead represents Thailand’s position as the “pearl of the Andaman Sea.”

Speaking to one Thai newspaper Chief Executive Officer Thongma Vijitpongpun said: “Thailand is like the pearl of the Andaman Sea,” CEO Thongma Vijitpongpun. After AEC (the ASEAN Economic Community) comes in effect (in December 2015), Thailand will be the centre of business.”

Despite those assurances, many say it reminds them of London’s infamous “The Gherkin” building, or 30 St Mary Axe.
