His Majesty the King informed the government that more areas were needed for people to watch the royal cremation ceremony at Sanam Luang, reports local media. His Majesty the King has granted permission for mourners to observe the royal funeral processions from 3 sides of the Grand Palace.
Mourners will be able to observe the royal funeral processions along Maha Rat Road to Sanam Chai Road while the area north of Sanam Luang and the area outside the royal ceremonial ground will also be allocated for mourners, says Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Detnarong Suthichanbancha to The Nation. There will be 9,420 square meters added to the available space which can accommodate 18,800 more people. This will be added to the previously reserved areas that can hold an estimated 171,000 people.
It is being reported that crowds of people arrived to reserve a space in the vicinity of the royal cremation on Monday with more having joined them in the following days. A round of rain forced many people there to take shelter under umbrellas to combat the weather. In addition to this, some mourners were sitting along local roads near Sanam Luang, including Rattanakosin Hotel, Khlong Lot canal and Chang Rong Si Bridge, waiting for security screening at checkpoints to open.
The checkpoints will open on early Wednesday morning and mourners already in line are hoping to get a place as close to the royal cremation of the late King Rama IX as possible. Large numbers of mourners from around Thailand have been arriving in Bangkok ahead of the ceremonies.
A pair of special trains left Hat Yai on Monday providing a way for those living in the province to reach the royal cremation ceremony in time. Several extra trains from other provinces have also been making their way to Bangkok in the past few days.
