The former Cunard cruise liner Queen Elizabeth 2 could find a new home in Asia as a luxurious 500-bed hotel after a deal was reached to loan the ship from its current owners.

Media reports indicate that a joint-venture involving Oceanic Group, a Singapore-based investment company, will pay US$1 million per year to loan the ship from Dubai World. Singapore and Hong Kong have been touted as possible destinations.

Daniel Chui, Managing Director of Oceanic Group, told the UK’s Telegraph newspaper: “The Queen Elizabeth 2 is starting the next exciting journey of her long and illustrious career," said Daniel Chui, managing director of Oceanic Group.  Our vision is for the ship to become a landmark cultural and tourist attraction – a beacon of luxury, glamour, quality and tradition – in the heart of a leading Asian city that shares her rich maritime heritage and is prepared to give this very special ship the prominent waterfront home she deserves."

Queen Elizabeth 2 was launched in 1969. Unit its last voyage in 2008 it spent close to 40 years under the Cunard flag.
