Thailand’s ruling National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has given the go ahead for a THB2.4 trillion infrastructure plan that will be implemented over the course of the next eight years.
Permanent Secretary for Transport, Soythip Trisuth, unveiled details to the media after the NCPO meeting on Tuesday. He said the massive investment for the transport system would be carried out between 2015 and 2022, and will aim to facilitate social stability and economic growth.
The scheme is comprised of five key projects – development of inter-city rail network, development of transportation in Bangkok and its vicinity, improvement of highway network to link important local production hubs with markets in neighbouring countries, development of water transport network, and enhancing Thailand’s air transport competitiveness.
The NCPO, according to the Public Relations Department of the Royal Thai Government, also signed off on a THB127 billion project to construct six dual-track lines, and also appointed a task force to find financial sources for the project within a 30-day time frame.
Once the construction is completed, the train track will have a combined length of 887 kilometers.
