The historic Dusit Thani Bangkok is set to close its doors next year as the site will make way for a massive mixed-use development that will have retail space, an office building and the new Dusit Thani Bangkok. That project is being developed as part of a joint venture agreement between CPN and Dusit Thani International.
The hotel’s last day of operation will be 16 April 2018, according to a press release. The property was founded by Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui and opened in 1970. The Dusit Thani Bangkok was the city’s tallest building and largest hotel when it first opened 47 years ago.
“Dusit Thani Bangkok is an icon made everlasting through all those who share its history, and we are sincerely grateful to everyone over the years who has made the hotel a resounding success. The special series of events and promotions we are introducing have been specially designed to thank our guests, staff and stakeholders for their loyal support, as well as commemorate the hotel’s rich heritage which will be carried over into our exciting new chapter to come. The Dusit Thani legend will continue,” says Sukanya Janchoo, General Manager of Dusit Thani Bangkok, in a press release.
The new hotel is expected to open in 2022 with the entire development set to be completed two years later. In addition to the demolition of the hotel, several empty buildings near the property will also be demolished. However, many trees and the hotel’s famous spire will be incorporated into the new project.
The Dusit Thani Bangkok was a landmark in the city when it first welcomed guests in 1970. It was one of the only hotels to offer authentic Thai hospitality to guests at the time and helped revolutionise tourism in Bangkok. The property hosted numerous celebrities throughout the years and was also a popular place for weddings.
