4 Thai Cities Get Green Light For Light Rail Projects

Phuket, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, and Nakhon Ratchasima have all gotten approval to start construction on light rail projects in 2018, reports local media. The projects are worth THB161 billion combined and are part of the Transport Ministry’s infrastructure plan. Each one will use the public-private partnership (PPP) programme for investment.

“The government is hopeful that construction of those 4 projects could commence next year in a bid to reduce traffic congestion in those cities,” says Transport Minister Arkhom Termpitayapaisith to the Bangkok Post.

The light rail project in Phuket has already had its feasibly study completed. The Phuket light rail will require a THB24 billion investment. The project will see a 60 kilometre light rail with 23 stations stretch from Tha Nun in Phangnga province to Phuket airport and the island’s inner city. The design of the project is also done and will be submitted to the Transport Ministry before the end of the year.

In Chiang Mai, the local university conducted a study on rail development land in the city. This has been completed and 2 options are being proposed. The 1st proposal will have 3 lines with both land and underground parts. The 2nd proposal will also contain 3 lines but would be a land only project. Both will be submitted to the Transport Ministry approval this month.

The Khon Kaen light rail project is in the process of completing an environmental impact assessment. That project will feature 18 stops that will run along Mittraphap Road from the Tha Phra locality to the Samran locality. The model in Khon Kaen could be used in other Thai cities.

Nakhon Ratchasima’s light rail project is worth an estimated THB15 billion and the design is already finished. These plans will be presented to the Transport Ministry for approval before the end of the year.
